Under 15 C Division

Lisvane Panthers Blue: 4 (Sam (15, 67), Ross (42, 60)) - Cardiff Hibernians: 2 (24(pen), 52)
Venue: Glider Field
HT (1 - 1)

Panthers showed a steely edge to shake off a determined Hibs in this season's opening league encounter.

Debutant Sam seized upon an early opening, cancelled from the spot shortly after as both sides fought to gain the early advantage.

Strong running from a five-man midfield of Harry, James F, Lewis, Max and Sam combined with an assured performance from 'keeper Mat and the defensive trio of Ellis, Luke and Nye gave the side a solid base from which to launch the new strike partnership of James S and Ross.

The second-half began brightly as Ross' strong run and finish gave Panthers the lead.

Once again, the visitors took little time in responding with an equaliser.

Nye's long-range strike and Ross' goal-bound header from one of Harry's many corners forced athletic saves from the Hibs 'keeper as the home side continued to drive forward.

Panthers finally retook the initiative when Ross' determination allowed him to poach his second and the result was sealed when the busy Sam secured his brace from yet another corner.

A workmanlike performance, rewarded by three points and enjoyed by a record army of supporters!

Under 15 Cup Round One

Lisvane Panthers Blue: 4 (Harry (3, 62), James S (23), Lewis (47)) - Urdd: 3 (11, 35, 76)
Venue: Glider Field
HT (2 - 2)

Panthers were made to work hard to edge this Cup match against spirited Urdd.

Harry's powerful run and shot got the home side off to a flier but Urdd took little time in finding an equaliser.

James S restored the lead only for Urdd to strike shortly before half-time.

The break saw Luc replace debutant Mitchell up front as part of some deft tactical adjustments from Mike N.

A keenly fought second period was illuminated by Lewis' blast from a tight angle and when Harry's well placed free kick found the net Panthers finally had some breathing space.

Tired legs brought the introduction of the busy Dan and Lloyd.

Urdd continued to go forward. They were rewarded by a late goal but were unable to find another to take the tie into extra-time.

Under 15 C Division

Pentwyn Dynamo: 6 (28, 35, 39, 52, 61, 74) - Panthers Blue: 0
Venue: Wern Fawr
HT (3 - 0)

Panthers were left to rue their missed early chances as league leaders Pentwyn ran away with the spoils.

The visitors started strongly with James S, Jordan and Harry all going close.

Nye's volley, cleared off the line from Harry's corner in the 25th minute, proved to be their last clear chance.

Pentwyn struck against the run of play after 28 minutes and the match turned on its head.

The hosts clinically drove through twice more to extend their advantage and only Mat's agility and positioning saved Panthers from conceding further in the first period.

Panthers' defence dug deep to repel waves of attacks as Pentwyn's accomplished front six continued to dominate the second half.

Despite eventually conceding three more goals, Panthers will take heart from the effort shown by every player (an 80%er, Mike!) and look forward to their next chance to fulfill their early season promise.

Under 15 C Division

RAFA: 5 (26, 28, 35, 39, 62, 74) - Panthers Blue: 4 (Harry (35, 55), Ross (43), Sam (48))
Venue: Trelai
HT (3 - 1)

An even opening spell ended dramatically as the combative hosts benefited from defensive hesitancy to strike three times in ten minutes.

The tide was turned before the interval when Harry's free kick from the centre circle briefly troubled the air traffic control radar at Rhoose before nestling in the back of the net.

A perfect start to the second half saw Ross bundle the ball in from short range and Sam head in Ross' pin-point cross.

Harry's second strike from a free kick gave Panthers a deserved lead.

Nye's chest-back was kept out by Mat's flying leap only for the resulting corner to be converted to bring the scores level.

With the massed ranks of Panthers' injured making the touchline resemble wartime Downton Abbey, the hosts pressed forward relentlessly and struck the winner with six minutes remaining.

Entertainment Value: 9/10, though Panthers will wish to emulate their hosts' robust approach in the games ahead.

Under 15 C Division

Panthers Blue: 2 (James F. (49), Harry (77) - Urdd: 1 (47)
Venue: Pontcanna
HT (0 - 0)

Both sides came away with much credit as the wind lashed Pontcanna.

Dawn had seen Wales qualify for the semi-final of the RWC and some players might have been excused being off the pace.

Panthers and Urdd, however, still managed to deliver lung-busting performances, full of effort, if lacking in silky skills and cutting edge passing in the wind.

Playing against the elements in the first period, Panthers came close to a dream start as Lewis came close within a minute.

Two minutes later the visitors' 'keeper saved bravely at the feet of Ross.

Urdd regrouped and, aided by the gale at their back, took territorial advantage for the rest of the half, consistently beating their hosts in the fifty-fifty challenges.

Only last ditch defending from Panthers kept the scores level at the break.

The second half saw Panthers benefit from the wind but Urdd struck first from a direct through ball on 47 minutes.

It didn't take long for Panthers to get level as a determined James F converted Harry's speculative free-kick from deep inside his own half.

Panthers drove forward and Nye had his delicate lob headed off the line by an observant defender.

Urdd's counter-attacks continued to pose a threat but the match seemed destined to end in a draw.

With time running out, Harry launched another free-kick from his own half deep into the Urdd penalty area.

The ball bounced awkwardly and, to the delight of the home side, found its way over the line for the winner.

Under 15 Cup, Round 2

Thornhill: 7 (23, 31, 39, 58, 64, 73, 76) - Panthers Blue: 2 (Harry 34, Ross 50)
Venue: Coed Glas
HT (3 - 1)

Played within minutes of Wales 8-9 defeat to France in the World Cup Semi Final, Panthers fought hard to stay in this game against the U15A Division leaders.

Whilst Warburton was sent off for failing to plump up the pillows before returning a French winger to the big, green Eden Park mattress, the referee of this derby had no need for his cards despite a competitive encounter.

The league leaders drove forward from the start and their pressure finally bore fruit with strikes in the 23rd and 31st minutes.

Harry delicately curled his free-kick (this time from only 20 yards) into the bottom corner to halve the deficit before Thornhill scored again just before the break.

Buoyed by another half-time sermon, the busy James F saw his long range effort rise beyond the crossbar early in the second period.

Ross then chased a lost cause and benefited from defensive hesitancy to tap in.

Thornhill were reeling as Lewis narrowly missed converting an equaliser with a strike from a tight angle.

The hosts finally regained their composure with their fourth goal.

Panthers were then grateful for Mat's agility and Nye's goal line clearances but, as legs tired, they were powerless to prevent Thornhill claiming three late strikes.

Coach Mike awarded the team 90% for effort in this one.

The crowd agreed and look forward to the lads maintaining the same spirit in matches against less illustrious opposition.

Under 15 C Division

Heol Hir: 2 (5, 27) - Panthers Blue: 2 (Ross 50, 51)
Venue: Cefn Onn
HT (2 - 0)

After a four week break, school-yard pride was at stake in this local derby.

Heol Hir dominated the opening period and they will have been disappointed to go into the break with just a two-goal advantage.

Panthers remained on the back foot at the start of the second half as defensive indecision forced Mat to save spectacularly to keep the deficit within reach.

The match turned decisively after fifty minutes when Nye's precise reverse pass gave Ross space to attack and drive home.

Within thirty seconds of the restart Mitchell was denied by the 'keeper.

Ross acrobatically grabbed the opportunity to lob the resulting loose ball over the line for the equaliser.

Sensing victory from the jaws of a likely derby defeat, Panthers poured forward.

James F went close with a header and two shots as the home 'keeper kept his side in the match.

Mike and Lewis also had chances to secure the points before the referee, who had overcome the challenges of a pitch with no line markings, brought proceedings to a close with honours shared.

Under 15 C Division

Cardiff Hibernians: 2 (56, 72) - Panthers Blue: 2 (Nye 2, 64)
Venue: Wilson Road
HT (1 - 1)

For the second week running an out-of-sorts Panthers fought hard for a share of the spoils.

Buoyed by Nye's efficient conversion of an early corner from Harry, Panthers nevertheless spent much of the first period heroically rebuffing waves of Hibs attacks.

With the first half coming to a close and against the run of play, Nye's shot was saved spectacularly and Ross narrowly failed to double Panthers' advantage from the rebound.

With the fresh legs of James S, Dan and Tom B introduced to the midfield in the second half, Panthers continued to find themselves pinned back as the hosts sought to overturn their early season reverse.

Ellis and Luke both put in towering performances at the heart of defence but were powerless to prevent a rasping low drive that forced the athletic Mat into a sprawling save, touching the ball on to the outside of the post.

Soon after the hosts took full advantage of defensive hesitancy at a corner to scramble an equaliser after 56 minutes.

As legs tired on both sides, Lewis started to find more room on the right flank.

A series of breaks down that channel were eventually rewarded when his cross found Tom B. Tom's strike was half blocked allowing an unmarked and loitering Nye to strike home the rebound from typically minimal distance.

The game was by no means safe. Hibs continued to drive forward and were duly rewarded with a deserved headed equaliser.

On the balance of play this point was a steal for the visitors, but also a fitting reward for the effort and sustained focus of their determined defence.

Under 15 C Division

Panthers Blue: 1 (James F 4) - Pentwyn Dynamo: 0
Venue: Glider Field
HT (1 - 0)

The reverse fixture saw the talented Pentwyn midfield craft a 6-0 rout. How would Panthers set up to thwart their table-topping visitors?

Mourinho said 4-4-2 with a diamond midfield. Sir Alex suggested 4-5-1. Mike N went for 4-2-3-1, a formation greeted by an error message on Sky Sport's Football Manager website!

But what a masterstroke! This formation, combined with the uneven Glider pitch, prevented the silky passing moves that allowed Pentwyn to dominate the first encounter.

Opting to play with the wind in the first half proved decisive when, after just four minutes, James F's cross floated over the 'keeper and inside the far post.

A tight opening period saw few chances, although Lewis shot narrowly over and Pentwyn struck the base of the post.

Panthers were bolstered by the second half introduction of the tenacious Sam and selfless running of Ross and later, by Mike D's robust approach.

Pentwyn took control but Panthers, inspired by Mike N's barked directions, limited them to strikes from distance.

The latter stages were full of negatives: no defensive hesitancy, no dramatic last-ditch saves from the 'keeper, no lack of endeavour and, crucially, no goals as Panthers ground out a deserved, if unlikely, victory.

Under 15 C Division

Panthers Blue: 6 (Ross 3, Lewis 11, Harry 26, 58, 77, James F 38, James F 4) - Heol Hir: 0
Venue: Glider Field
HT (4 - 0)

Chastened by their poor showing in the drawn reverse derby match, Panthers were quickly out of the blocks.

In the third minute James S' strong, meandering run allowed him to tee up Ross for a confident finish.

Shortly after James F provided the through ball allowing Lewis to finish at the second attempt.

Ross' quick throw set Harry free for a clinical finish before James F ended the first period with a volley driven into the corner of the net from Harry's pin point cross.

At the back, Max and Lloyd dominated, stemming repeated attacks down the flanks from the determined visitors.

Both sides were providing a combative encounter, played in a rugged but fair spirit on an uneven pitch that was not helping their shared desire to play a passing game.

With four subs deployed at half time, Panthers' fluency was disrupted briefly until Harry's low drive from distance and composed finish from Nye's cheeky lob gave him his hat trick.

Heol Hir continued to drive forward for a consolation goal but were unable to convert late chances against a Panthers defence growing in confidence by the match.

Saturday 14th January 2012

Under 15 C Division

Panthers Blue: 0 - RAFA: 1
Venue: Glider Field
HT (0 - 0)

Panthers will be disappointed not to have taken a share of the spoils in the first game of 2012.

A bright start saw Sam and Ross force goal line clearances in the game's first attack. Minutes later James F came close with a drive from distance.

Panthers went on to dominate possession in the first half but were unable to threaten in the final third of a difficult pitch.

A rejuvenated RAFA pressed forward after the break but Panthers' defence held them at bay.

After fifty-five minutes the gamed turned decisively when Ross, who had ploughed a lonely furrow up front, bravely tried to beat the advancing 'keeper to Nye's cross.

The resulting collision forced the attacking fulcrum to leave the field and left Panthers struggling to maintain their impetus going forward.

Five minutes later the combative visitors took the lead with a rare shot from distance.

Panthers, soon after reduced to ten men after James F was injured in a robust challenge, were unable to find an equaliser.

Whilst the defence will be pleased to have kept their opponents' scoring opportunities to a minimum, Panthers will hope to find more composure, creativity and presence in attack as the season progresses.
