Under 11 Orange
Venue: Morganstown Pitches
A great morning for the start of our 2009/10 season (not allocated last week): Fantastic Indian summer weather, on big, clear pitches, overlooked by Castle Coch.
Lisvane Panthers Orange vs. Radyr Rangers
Final Score: 1-3
I don't know what the Radyr players have been eating for breakfast - but it works! Big guys, with big kicks.
The first half started with a immediate lead for the Panthers when new player Rory chipped the ball into the net off one of the Radyr defenders.
Once that had woken Radyr up, they turned the pressure on and kept it on: scoring 3 goals in rapid succession - including some spectacular long shots soaring past aspiring new goalie Matthew S.
The second half saw a more determined defense from Matthew M and George, with James doing outstanding work as Sweeper intercepting and clearing attacks.
They didn't concede another goal.
------------------------
Lisvane Panthers Orange vs. Cyncoed FC
Final Score: 0-2
This was a hotly anticipated grudge match as Cyncoed included many of Jack and Rory's team mates.
Unfortunately, Cyncoed took control from the start, with excellent structure and good passing.
The first half saw several dangerous attacks on our goal - though only one made it through.
The panthers did look scrappy in this game but they kept fighting and they made Cyncoed work for both goals.
Ryan worked hard and defended tenaciously and with increasing confidence.
Despite their confident control and victory, Cyncoed seemed surprised that the Panthers had held their score down so effectively.
Indeed, with a more practiced attack strategy, the results might be different next time we meet.
------------------------
Lisvane Panthers Orange vs. Marlboro Sports B
Final Score: 1-0
Harry took control of the ball on the wing and placed a fantastic cross through the Marlboro defenders for Jack to step and slice a shot into the far corner of the net.
With that, the feel of the game changed. Spirits were lifted and we saw a more energetic and confident Panthers team for the second half.
James, Dylan and Harry worked tirelessly getting the ball up the field to Rory and Jack. But despite several good opportunities, they just couldn't find the goal again.
George and Morgan came on to give Rory and Matthew M a rest, and showed off some of their most energetic work of the day.
Matthew stopped shots left, right and centre and the whole team worked together to maintain their lead.
Overall, for their first matches, the squad already looked more like a team than last season. Each player knew he had a part to play and was taking responsibility for it.
With some more practice, this could be a very interesting season for the team.
Star-player today: James Chubb - for excellent skills reading the game and continuously putting himself in harm's way! Hope the myriad bruises heal soon!

Under 11 Orange
Venue: Court Field Pitches
Lisvane Panthers Orange vs. Lisvane Panthers Black
Final Score: 3-2
A friendly match with our sister team, the Blacks, started badly with them taking control of the game and scoring two goals.
By this team our team were waking up and, after a sure-footed clearance from Matthew S up the field, Dylan passed the ball to new signing Rhys, who side-stepped around the defence to slam the ball into their top corner and turn the tide.
The second half saw the Oranges playing downhill and Harry and Rhys and other forwards making the most of it.
Rhys scoring a hatrick on his first outing, to take us to our first win against the Blacks in a season, was surely a sign of things to come.
------------------------
Lisvane Panthers Orange vs. St Albans
Final Score: 1-2
Bouyed by their victory, the Panthers ran into the game against St Albans confidently, with some good interceptions and defence from James, George and Matthew M and a spectacular diving save from Matthew S.
There were some nice combinations from James to Rory and Dylan but they couldn't get the ball into the centre to Harry or Rhys and the goals wouldn't come.
Finally St Albans scored.
After a rest and Morgan coming off the bench to refresh the defence, the team had another renewed set of attacks, initiated by accurate, powerful kicks from James up the field and culminating in a sublime corner from James that Dylan headed into the goal to bring us even.
Harry took several impressive runs down the field but just couldn't cross the ball across soon enough to increase the tally.
Worse, the draw wasn't to last and St Albans got another one through.
------------------------
Lisvane Panthers Orange vs. Maindy Corries
Final Score: 0-5
Harry and Matthew S took a rest and Morgan took over from Matthew in goals and Matthew M got a chance to work midfield and forward.
The increased forward force saw several impressive runs from Matthew M, Rory and Rhys and repeated shots from Dylan - but they wouldn't go in.
Worse, when Maindy took the ball, despite James sweeping furiously the width of the pitch, and some energetic work from Ryan and George, they managed to take two goals.
That was it. The team ran out of puff and couldn't get their heads back up for the second half. They did their best but they lost their structure and couldn't catch up with Maindy's runs and, even with Matthew back in goal, Maindy scored another 3 goals in rapid succession.
Star-player today: Rhys Flower - for an impressive hatrick in his first game for the Orange squad

Under 11 Orange
Venue: Fairwater Primary Pitches
Lisvane Panthers Orange vs. Fairwater Primary
Final Score: 1-3
An excellent start on a very gusty morning saw Dylan and Rhys pushing forward from the whistle.
Harry scored with a well placed volley following James' corner cross. Barely a minute into the first match and one-nil up. Good start!
Unfortuantely that was the wake up call that Fairwater needed and they started fighting back with a string of impressive attacks. Their well spread attacking players were able to pull Matthew M and the defence to one side and then cross and shoot. Matthew S threw some pretty good dives at the shots, but coudn't stop Fairwater scoring three before the half-time whistle.
The second half saw a fresh defence from George and Morgan. Matt M pushed up to midfield while Rhys nursed a pulled muscle. This structure worked more reliably, with the James and the defence holding off Fairwater and not conceding any more goals.
Matt M was impressive with some aggressive tackles and some impressive long passes.
------------------------
Lisvane Panthers Orange vs. Rhiwbina Black
Final Score: 0-5
This was a match against our old derby sparring partners (formerly Llanishen FC).
The panthers started strongly with some excellent assists from Rory and Dylan giving Rhys the chance for some cracking shots.
The unpredictable sideways gusts seemed to be working for Rhiwbina - either pushing the ball past the posts or away from the corners and into the goalie's hands. They just wouldn't go in!
James worked furiously sweeping everything between the 10 yard and the centre line - but it was hard work getting the ball up field, and if it got past James, it was an uphill struggle for Ryan and Matt M to defend against Rhiwbina's well rehearsed attacks, and their strikers put 2 leisurely balls far to the side of our keeper, and one lucky 20 yard shot just in front of Matt S' reaching fingertips.
What was most noticable was that our players were regularly getting to the ball, but frequently fumbling the possession - mistakes that Rhiwbina immediately capitalised on everytime. Time for some more training!
The second half saw Morgan being thrown straight in at the deep end in goals - immediately having to make 2 or 3 impressive saves.
Harry made some impressive runs up the right wing and Dylan and Rhys had some good combinations in front of the Rhiwbina goal but couldn't get past their defence.
Rhiwbina's unrelenting attacks took their toll and, despite the enegetic defending and hassling from Ryan and Matt M, they took another two goals.
------------------------
Lisvane Panthers Orange vs. FC Dragons
Final Score: 1-1
This was the match were Rory and Jack suddenly came into their own. They were both played on the left wing and consistently took the ball up between them to give Rory or Dylan shots.
Unfortunately, the Dragons' goalie was very good at his job.
In the second half, James took an impressive goal kick for Matt S, and Dylan made the most of the ball, taking it up the field and crossing for Harry finally sank a goal amidst a goal-mouth scramble.
Finally, in the last minutes of the day, the Panthers had taken the lead again. Then, with only a minute to go, the Dragons took a goal back from a corner and lucky tap.
Star-player today: Matthew M- for some impressive midfield work that how good his ball touch is when he's playing a more confident centred position.

With it being half-term we knew the squad would be depleted - down to one sub as is turned out - which would exhaust the remaining team, or give them extra match time and experience - or both!
Lisvane Panthers Orange vs. Radyr
Half Time: 0 - 3
Final Score: 0 - 5
An over optimisitic first half saw 3 in defence and 4 up front for this game.
But without James sweeping, Morgan, Ryan, MattM and George, despite their best efforts, couldn't hold back the Radyr set-plays or get the ball forward enough for the forwards to take it on.
Reforming to have 4 at the back and 3 up front, worked much better and gave the team more control for the rest of the morning.
------------------------
Lisvane Panthers Orange vs. Marshfield
Half Time: 0 - 2
Final Score: 0 - 4
There were some impressive positioning and fearless tackles from Ryan and some nice touches, passing the ball up to midfield.
Matt M made his prescence felt working as sweeper and pushing up into midfield and striking as well.
Jack showed off what impressive kicks he was capable of, clearing the ball accurately well into Marshfield's half.
As his confidence at taking the ball builds, he should prove to be a player to watch.
------------------------
Lisvane Panthers Orange vs. Maindy
Half Time: 0 - 4
Final Score: 0 - 6
Both Dan and Dylan saw a lot of action in their goal this game.
Maindy had themselves a lot of opportunities and it was inevitable that some would get past the goalies' best efforts.
This game saw George's most energetic play this season in defence and making runs on the the right wing.
Harry and Rhys made some impressive headway into Maindy's penalty box but couldn't get the shots in.
Despite the score, this game saw some of the team's best play against a very strong team.
There was a lot of hard work from everyone on the field together.
If we can keep the work going in training and improve the team-work, we should see some good progress.
Star-player today: Morgan Sloan for sterling work and perserverance in goal and some excellent saves.

After a stern talking to, the team bucked their ideas and effort up considerably and really got stuck in.
Morgan and George really starting working their defensive role and allowing James to move further into midfield and move the ball up-field.
Finally, a hard fought for and well deserved goal from one of James' spot-on corners, intercepted by Dylan and passed to Harry to put home.
By the end of the match, the team was looking like the orange team of old.

The second half of the last game saw the best footballing spirit of the day, with the team all suddenly hungry to get a draw.
Highlights were the 5-header rally and Harry's intrepid saves at the limit of the box.
The team are all getting a better feel for the positions and space on the field. Some need to plunge in rather than holding back, and others need to hold back rather than plunging in! You know who you are!

Lisvane Panthers Orange vs. Marshfield
Half Time: 0-1
Final Score: 2-1
Marshfield wisely coned out a new pitch on clear field and the footing was great.
Immediately, it was obvious that the panthers were playing a different game this week: there was less tension, less holding back, and more professionalism.
Even the first conceded goal, which Matt S went out challenging for, but couldn't get back to stop trickling in, didn't upset the mode. The team reset, and got on with the job.
The second half saw a good run from Rhys and a desparate kick in the direction of the goal, and to everyone's amazement, it rolled through the keepers legs, below his outstretched fingers.
With their increased confidence, the team all pushed back up the pitch, and James saw a tiny window of opportunity and blasted an accurate, long, shot through the defenders and took the score to 2-1.

Dylan's perfect touch sent the ball straight into goal... almost. It bounced and stayed in the puddle in front of the goal line, with both sides standing and staring.
St Albans woke up first, and rescued it.

As the stats show: this week saw a huge jump in performance. The team looked more comfortable on the pitch; less startled by the ball!
They covered for each other as the shape changed, and they supported each other.
And more important: they each put the effort in while still trusting each other to do their job.
Well done team. A pleasure to watch and coach. Bring on the next match!

After all the cancelled Saturdays, it was great to be playing again. The weather just about held and we played some of our most mature football todate.
We have a way to go on skills and moving the ball around the opposition instead of attempting to take or kick it through, but there were a lot fewer mistakes losing possession and a lot more awareness of the other players.
Keep working and making the opportunities.
