Fact - the most frustrating pre-season, admidst the wettest August / early September on record. Some keenly contested training sessions did take place including timed interval training, which we shall return to, to measure fitness. In between the rain, we managed to play two friendlies.
A good game against the 'B's ( 9-3 ), who to their credit pulled out the stops to play at very short notice. Must mention, Jenkins R with 4 including some extremely classy efforts. Ryan must have broken a club record, as this is the third Panthers side he has played for! He's happy to be playing with his school team mates, and he'll prove to be a great addition to the team. Whilst on ins and outs, we also welcomed Alex Fenton, who always gives 100%. Ryan and Alex took the places of Michael P, who also created a record in leaving us for a second time! - and Rory Shadwell. Rory just looking for activity outside of football.
Other scorers were our goalies in centre forward mode - 2 a piece for Moore J and Williams H! (Gurney R of the regulars with the other). A useful outing for both teams, and the 'B's certainly proved that by beating Whitchurch 4-1 a few days later - excellent result.
The second friendly was the usual challenge against Fairwater ( 3-7 ). Not bad, but more competitiveness will be required in the actual season. Goalscorers - Hinchly C, Williams H (what - again!) and Bould A.

Trowbridge: 2 - Lisvane Panthers A: 4
Venue: Rumney Recreation Ground
After over 2 weeks of seemingly non stop rain, the season eventually kicked off - in what was an odd game in many ways.
Trowbridge went one up with their first attack, but this stung the boys into action, and by half time they were 4-1 up - whilst it could have been a few more too.
The second half almost seemed too easy and again chance after chance went begging, and a double figure tally could have been achievable on a better day.
However, Trowbridge scored from a late 'dodgy' penalty and made a real game of it and I think we were glad they didn't get a third! Goalscorers being Calliva A, Hinchly C, Gurney R and tonight's pick from Bould A.
The final notable being the last wearing of the legendary orange 'Arsenal 1998 away kit style shirt' that has been adorned from the age of 8. Has there ever been so much wear delivered from one kit? -see photo for posterity.(Jonathan Bould)

Fairwater Juniors: 4 - Lisvane Panthers A: 1
Venue: Poplar Park
An outstanding performance did not provide the merited result, but the boys can be very pleased with themselves for matching Fairwater in terms of attitude and commitment.
In short, they did their best and ultimately that is all that we ever want from them.
This was exemplified by a number of situations including Racz J's fearless, noisy collision, which could have been heard in St Fagans!; young Gurney R's late tackle and some great saves by Moore J.
The game was 1-1 following another Bould A free kick on target and with less than ten to go there was all to play for.
Unfortunately, the roof then caved in and 3 goals were disappointingly conceded considering the excellent defending that had preceded them.
So the challenge is on to repeat this level over the coming weeks and months.

Lisvane Panthers A: 1 - Danescourt: 2
Venue: Gleider Field
Even shorn of of the legend that is 'Big Joe' (gone to seek his fortune in the Vale of Glamorgan League - centre halves in Cardiff can sleep easier in their beds now), Danescourt still had big heart and thoroughly deserved to win.
Not a great technical team, they played it simple - and with a refreshing attitude, they had an enthusiasm about them that we just didn't have. We also lacked quality, which didn't help Big Dave's blood pressure. Apart from a few game runs on the wings from Jenkins R and Hinchly C, boot it and hope was the order of the day.
The other points of note were not particularly auspicious.
Firstly, a very poor early tackle by Bould A merited a yellow card, but he was given the benefit of the doubt by the referee.
However, only 5 minutes later he then proceeded to kick someone else - yellow card this time! Then, a debatable 'non handball' decision against a Panthers player; the ball broke free and Alex cracked it home - goal stood, but should it have done? So Rob King - no more morning tee off times please. (Today's ref was Bould J by the way).

Celts FC: 2 - Lisvane Panthers A: 9
Venue: Caedelyn
To be honest, it was a pretty dodgy start as Celts could and maybe should have been 2 up in the first 5 minutes. However, their defending was even worse than ours (sorry Rich!) and we scored on our first two attacks to steady the ship.
Even though there was a quick repost, a couple of positional adjustments
lead to a more solid base and it was fairly comfortable after that - although
we'll make mention of a late 30 yd cracker from their right winger from
the high school, Rhys Hawkins, who was the source of our discomfort in the
first half.
It was a day for braces - four of them, plus Bould A's singular leftie -
from Lawson W, Calliva A, Hinchly C (including todays probable pick) and
Gurney R; the latter two gaining 'the management's' particular approval
- Chris for excellent energy and quality throughout and Rowan's best performance
for a while - 'what's he had for breakfast?' Big Dave was heard to ask -
but whatever it was, the same next week please.

Under 15 Cup - 1st Round
Lisvane Panthers A: 5 - Glyncoed Corries: 1
Venue: Caedelyn
A patient performance with a real effort to build some passing patterns. We also nearly had our first clean sheet thanks to a great Brown B penalty save, but it was not to be...
Noteworthy performances today from Bould A, with 2 goals; Gurney R - did everything but score and King R - over his injured knee for his bow this season, and was the epitomy of keeping it simple and disciplined - good stuff Rhyd.
Other scorers were Calliva A with two fine finishes (also apologies for forgetting to mention a goal with his left foot last week!!); and first of the season for Cox C, with a header.

AFC Rumney: 0 - Lisvane Panthers A: 6
Venue: University Fields
Oh Brown M - you just can not turn up late, after your son scores what is likely to be his best goal ever, even if he plays until he is...well as old as us - first time 20 yard left footer into the top corner! Not only that, Ben was MoM today for a 'proper' full back performance.
King R, his partner in crime on the right also deserves a mention - what a combination. Apart from that, its B+ and A performances all round, with the first clean sheet to boot.
The other goals from Calliva A (2), Gurney R, Bould A and Buckley H - a cheeky little cameo from Harry!

Lisvane Panthers A: 3 - Ely Rangers: 2
Venue: Caedelyn
Well done to all the 'little soldiers' with their best result for 2 years; although not the flowing game of last week, they did show the necessary commitment and attitude to match the the early league leaders' physicality.
This was epitomised by that 6' 2" 'little tommy', Williams H, who dominated his penalty area really well - and received a few kicks for his troubles too. Unfortunately, so did Drury M - Matt suffering a shocking challenge - but fortunately it looks like nothing too serious.
That was highly unimpressive, but so was the opposition's general attitude, meaning that referee, King R, even had to raise his voice! Disappointing, when they are a useful side of course.
Other positives to note were further solid performances from centre backs Cox C and Jenkins R; plus goals from Bould A (2) and Calliva A.(Jonathan Bould)
Under 15 Cup - 2nd Round
Lisvane Panthers A: 8 - Thornhill Athletic: 1
Venue: Trelai
Regretably Trelai was in the worst condition ever seen - resembling the Flanders mud of 1914; you wonder how much more football there will be during November, if we get the normal downpours.
So it was satisfying to win the 'local derby' in pretty good order. All 16 available today had a run out and it was good to see Fenton A score - infact he grabbed three, and one suspected he was rather pleased - well done Alex!
Calliva A was also in on the act with three, whilst Lawson W and Cox C scored the others.
Other notes - Gurney R cracking the cross-bar; a candidate for save of the season from 'guest keeper' Bould A and another impressive performance from Jenkins R.

AFC Whitchurch: 1 - Lisvane Panthers A: 3
Venue: Hailey Park
Unfortunately, Big Dave had to dash to Heathrow after just half an hour, and apart from his Panthers duties, we're also grateful for his efforts to boost the economy as he jetted off to China yet again!
He missed a keenly fought game with the 'back five' maintaining their dependability and progressive distribution.
Drury M again demonstrated his growing influence on procedings having recovered from various injuries - Matt usually able to dodge the 'duckpond' in the middle of the pitch as well, which was otherwise surprisingly good.
Also a productive day for the strikers with quality performances and goals from Calliva A and Gurney R.
They have been joined by the 'scourge of Bro Morgannwg', Joyce J, from the 'b's, - Josh duly scoring on his debut with some aplomb.
It's not gone unnoticed that there are now 4 'b originals' in the squad, which is a testimony to Chris Jackson and co's efforts over the years.

Llanedeyrn Bulldogs: 3 - Lisvane Panthers A: 2
Venue: Pontprennau
First game at Pontprennau for a couple of years perhaps allowed a bit of an extra lie in for most. A pity, as the boys started off as if they were dog tired.
Llanedeyrn were certainly quicker out of the traps, and played with with some real bite in the first half an hour to go 3 up. After that we were definitely the masters and played some good football, but it wasn't quite enough to overcome their lead, as they 'dogged' it out.
Consequently, the team's best ever winning run of 6 matches came to a barking halt.
Other notes - a kennel club's worth of chances were missed - how Calliva A didn't score twice, only Alessandro will know!; Plus great strikes from Drury M - Matt's first for the club - and Hinchly C.

Pentrych Rangers: 2 - Lisvane Panthers A: 2
Venue: Parc y Dwrlyn
If Superman always has his red cape with him, then King R Snr was not to be outdone. When the home referee advised he was injured, Rob cooly announced that he just happened to have his black kit with him - just in case of such an eventuality!
Unflappable as ever, even when there was the almost obligatory off-side decision controversy - but the Lisvane Posse backed the linesman and were successfully able to shout down the counter claims from the Pentrych subs!
All this 'excitement' was only possible, because we were playing in the hills, as all Cardiff Parks pitches were called off. Not only that, the normal Pentrych typhoon was absent amidst glorious sunshine, so the usual postage sized pitch could be overlooked for once.
An interesting game then ensued, which spookily followed the same pattern as the last encounter between the two sides, and produced the same result.
The team started well and looked very promising after two expert finishes from Joyce J - Josh demonstrating why this week he became joint winner of LHS's year 9 Outstanding Footballer award for 07/08.
However, Pentyrch gained the upper hand and drew level midway through the second half, but the boys showed some resilience and infact could have won it by the end. Overall though, a fair result.
Finally, an apology for last weeks lame puns, which initiated a response from the 'Bard of Radyr' to see how references to writing implement and Ottoman Empire could be included in this week's report - well I couldn't, but they merit a mention nevertheless.

Just great to be back on the paddock after the 6 week break - paddock being the operative word with the local equine fraternity leave their calling cards. In fact, once the dung was removed / spread, the pitch was in surprisingly good nick, which we should be grateful for, as most games were called off with waterlogged pitches.
On the day, the performance seemed quite frustrating with a bit of rustiness. But on reflection there are a number of positives, certainly, in the first half with some good passing moves. Also, Gurney R rediscovered his goal touch with a brace (a neat finish and a good 'poach'); one of Cox C's mad dashes bore fruit as he forced a corner, and then subequently headed it in and Jenkins R was resolute at the back again.

Lisvane Panthers A: 3 - Pentrych Rangers: 1
Venue: Caedelyn
This 'one match a month' season is hard work, but today's was worth waiting for.
Pentrych were their normal, determined selves, led by some pretty quick Cardiff schools rugby lads.
They deserved to be in front at half-time, winning the majority of the 50/50s. Meanwhile, despite being grateful to play, we were literally getting bogged down in the middle of a poor pitch.
The guys were asked to work it out for themselves, and it was good to see a bit of character come through. They gradually wrestled control, and the chances came - and went. That was down to a series of excellent saves from Rangers' keeper, 'Ieuan', including a memorable 'finger tipper' from a Bould A curler.
By now, it wasn't far off 'squeeky bum' time, but 3 goals came in the last 20 minutes - really well taken efforts from Calliva A, Brown B and Joyce J - turned it around.
The Pentrych support were graciously sporting, stating we deserved to win - just like Wales (I suppose!)

Lisvane Panthers A: 2 - Whitchurch: 1
Venue: Caedelyn
HT (1-0)
As King R (snr) remarked, two consecutive matches - it's almost like a football season!
Despite losing 0-3 to Trowbridge the previous week - 'they didn't turn up' ( quote from ' Gentile Geoff ', AFC Whitchurch coach), - any claims of the complete demise of the former galacticos was somewhat premature. That result and the site of the orange shirt (victors in 3 of the last 4 encounters) were no doubt a good excuse for a big motivational 'chat', and so it proved.
They closed us down extremely well, and perhaps even deserved a share of the points. The fact they didn't is probably down to the 2 goalkeepers.
Two errors from the Whitchurch 'keeper provided a couple of opportunistic goals for the sharp Joyce J - a volley for the first was coolness personified; whilst Williams H was commanding and then made a couple of excellent blocks in the second half - only beaten by rare penalty; whilst from a goalmouth scramble, Payne D was there to head superbly off the line.
On the positive side, we kept trying to play the passing game, but this week we were caught in possession a number of times, which created unnecessary pressure.
But still overall, probably not a bad indicator that the boys can win when in a real nip and tuck game.
Will need to improve though to win the battle for third place against Ely next week.

Ely Rangers: 0 - Lisvane Panthers A: 1
Venue: Blackweir
HT (0-1)
A return to another old mini haunt brought a proper game of football between the 3rd and 4th places teams.
ITMA Fenton A - fresh from scoring twice only 20 hours previously to help LHS move into the Cardiff & Vale schools cup semis, Alex was there again after 12 minutes to turn in a corner.
It was a good time to score, as Ely had started well, and probably edged the first half - hitting the post and Payne D doing his heading off the line trick again.
The boys wrestled control of the midfield battle in the second half and played some quality stuff that merited the win.
Great effort all over the pitch and credit to a solid defensive unit to achieve the season's first clean sheet, with Moore J and Harris D putting in a sterling shift.
This was the improvement required from last week - and its no coincidence that they enjoyed playing on the best parks pitch we've seen this campaign (full size, flat and with grass on it - you'd hope it wasn't too much to ask for!),
The lads will hopefully take some real belief from this.

Under 15 A Division
Lisvane Panthers A: 3 - Thornhill Athletic: 1
Venue: Blackweir
HT (2-1)
This was hard work, as Thornhill demonstrated how much they have improved - the favourites tag for most of the Panthers against their school contemporaries not fitting comfortably.
That was certainly the case for the first half an hour, as Thornhill pressured and harried, and deservedly went one up.
However, the old phrase that 'goals change games' was certainly never more apt. Calliva A's contender for goal of the season eased the tension, and within another 5 minutes, pass of the day from Racz J put Lawson W away for a precise finish.
After that the boys were on top and deserved more reward than just Gurney R's close range effort.
The second half also contained a fair bit of teenage ranting and raving. As Cox S (Mrs) commented, 'there's a lot of emotion out there!'. Of course this excluded the geezer putting the 'crowd control' cones out - 'I'm just trying to avoid running into anyone and to be able to see the touchline', he protested.
Two thirds of the season now completed, and quite a contrast in statistics with last year at the same stage after 14 games.
Basically, there has been a general equalising in standards with goalkeepers and defences far tougher to beat.

Lisvane Panthers A: 1 - Llanedeyrn Bulldogs : 0
Venue: Blackweir
HT (0 - 0)
Phew! A display of real character, as the boys were under the cosh for much of the second half. Bulldogs are a strong side, and their more direct style perhaps suited the 'pudding' like conditions better.
Talking of which, it was good that all parties - including the neutral ref. - wanted to play, as a small part of the pitch resembled a bog, and it could easily have been called off.
We weren't the only ones with problems, as Thornhill was unplayable and that game had to be switched to Fairwater.
There could be several mentions in despatches today, but 'the touchline' view was that Cox C played his best game of the season, Jenkins R was as resolute as ever and Drury M's workrate was of Duracell proportions.
However, what was probably most pleasing was the collective defending from corners - of which there were many - to keep a clean sheet.
Although chances were at a premium, with 20 minutes to go, Gurney R eventually slipped a great ball through to Joyce J, whose finish was again top notch.
The front two had to work their hides off as well, and took a few knocks for their troubles from a quality centre half from Bristol City's academy.
Finally, this result sets a team record in 4 years of junior football of 6 wins on the trot.

A glorious first day of Spring weather wise - and if you're Irish of course - but not for Pantherites.
Whereas we have had the run of the ball these past weeks, we certainly didn't today from making errors to referring decisions. But overall, there was a lack of fluidity and width about our play, and despite a second half fightback we were never totally convincing.
Goals again for Calliva A - a rare header as well - and a super 25 yarder from Joyce J.
But spare a thought for Gurney R - defeat on his own school pitch, and he's also got to put up with most of this lot in school on Monday morning!

Lisvane Panthers A: 3 - Grangetown BC: 4
Venue: Blackweir
HT (3 - 1)
Possibly the best game the boys have been involved in this season. A very disciplined effort - rediscovering the joys of using the whole width of the pitch and passing continuity.
In the end, we were outdone by a determined Grangetown second half comeback, and a side, who contained two outstanding players.
Firstly, there's Abdi Noor, who scored the most skilfull goal you will ever see at junior football level - absolutely superb - as part of a decisive hat-trick; and then there was the 6' 3" clone of Patrick Viera (French World Cup winner for the uninitiated!), who used his long legs to protect the ball to good effect.
Goals today included an 'o.g.' after a Joyce J cross - Josh worked his socks off up front - was sliced into the net, and 2 canny headers for Bould A from two excellent Lawson W corners - certainly a case of the 'old one-two'.

Lisvane Panthers A: 0 - Fairwater Juniors: 2
Venue: Blackweir
Very tough on the lads not to get any reward again, as their commitment and general play deserved something in a very competitive game - particularly in the midfield area, where Williams H was on rare patrol to add some 'ballast'.
There was a spell in the second half where we certainly had the chances to score with Lawson W smacking the underside of the cross-bar being the closest. However, Fairwater rallied in the last 10 and scored twice to ease their frustration, which was expressed verbally both on and off the pitch, and in a mounting fouls conceded count.
Apart from one uncontrolled lunge, the lads' discipline was again exemplary.

In truth a pretty uneventful match, which after the tensions of the previous two was probably a relief.
A stranglehold was established in the first 20 minutes after 2 goals from Lawson W, and when Joyce J scored early in the second half, the advantage would prove insurmountable.
The game was seen out by some good battling and running by King R, Davies S and Buckley H, who have all been patient and showed good squad support over the past week.

Lisvane Panthers A: 2 - Celts FC: 2
Venue: Blackweir
HT (0 - 1)
Here endeth a manic period of 4 games in 8 days followed by nothing for 10 days - c'est la vie!
For once, it was Panthers who pulled something out of the fire. Celts had proved difficult to break down, and at 0-2 down with 10 minutes to go, we were going nowhere fast.
The turnaround was primarily down to Jenkins R and Joyce J. Firstly, Ryan, as he played through the pain barrier. More than a touch of irony here, as he had emailed that he would turn up just to watch because of his back injury, but said if we were a 'few down', he'd come on and help!
Well with 15 minutes to go, Big Dave was getting desperate and it was Ryan's intervention that assisted Josh to score the first of two absolute blinders from 20 yards.
Good luck to Celts in their relegation battle. Being similarly populated by 'lads who spend their Saturday afternoons in art galleries', the game was played in a good spirit.
However, in between a morning lie in and appreciating the finer points of Monet, some of the lads forgot that you do have to break into a sweat for the football in between!

Grangetown B.C: 3 - Lisvane Panthers A: 1
Venue: Blackweir

Another sterling effort, but unfortunately no reward again versus one of the top two.
A very even first half saw the lads play some creative stuff, but without securing the required breakthrough.
After the break, as expected, Grangetown came out all guns blazing and took the lead. However, a great repost saw Calliva A equalise immediately and later he headed against the bar.
At the other end, Jenkins J and Cox C were working overtime, but eventually the late pressure told.
A fair and sporting encounter, whilst the win almost certainly means the B.C will retain the league title.
The champagne moment being when 6' 4" 'Patrick Viera' was clean through and collided with Williams H, and came off second best.
Tremendous bravery from Harry, as I suspect none of the dads on the touchline would have fancied that!

Under 15 Division Cup Quarter Final
AFC Rumney Juniors: 2 - Panthers: 5
Venue: University Field
HT (1 - 2)
A result that takes the team through to its first semi final.
First half scorers were Gurney R and Payne D - Dan's first for the club; whilst the second half goals included a sharp left foot volley from Bould A and the best bit of football of the night as Drury M planted a measured header over the 'keeper after a pinpoint Lawson W cross.
However, the game was really decided just after half time. Firstly, controversy in the Panthers box, when a Rumney penalty claim was rebuffed, and then within 5 minutes at the other end, Calliva A was brought down, and Joyce J converted the spotkick.
Reffing is a thankless task as we know, but King R (snr) won't be too unhappy to be on the tee at Whitchurch G.C a week on Saturday at 10.30 a.m. when we have the last league game - vs Rumney!

Ely Rangers: 3 - Panthers: 1

Obvious disappointment as the road to Taffs Wells is closed off for another year.
No complaints as Ely were just about the stronger side in a good and competitive game. That was certainly the case in the first half, where we rarely threatened.
After the break a different story, when on another day, two great chances could have been converted.
Ultimately though, Gurney R's cool spot kick, after Joyce J was tripped, was all the lads had to show for a spirited second half performance.
In the meantime, we'll look forward to a good feed at Harry Ramsdens. Gaffer - mushy peas all round please!

Rumney's failure to secure the win meant they were for the drop (we assume), whilst it also threw Thornhill a lifeline, subject to other results.
For us it provided a positive finish, as results - if not performances - have been hard to get in the last month.
Goals today from Calliva A, Joyce J, Buckley H, an o.g. and the final addition to the statistics from Cox C. Chris having a go up front, as he continued to perfect his impression of a rampaging giraffe (as Bill McClaren would say) - don't get in his way!
In the end, we remained stuck in fifth for the third consecutive year - which is probably a disappointment, but there is no doubt that the squad has been more competitive overall than before.
Scores on the doors - 79 goals (60 in 22 league games and 19 in 4 cup games). Scorers - Calliva A (17); Joyce J (13); Bould A (12); Gurney R (10); Lawson W (6); Fenton A (4); Hinchly C (4); Cox C (4); Brown B (2); Buckley H (2); Drury M (2); Payne D (1) plus 2 o.g's.

The most elongated close season ever, but at least it kept the legs turning over, and confirmed this year as the 'nearly season of semi-finals' for the team.
Firstly, in May, there was the usual friendly with the 'B's, who recorded a notable 2-1 win.
Then, there was the washed out Cogan event in early June, which coincided with a month's rainfall in one day.
After that, we had to extend into July and travel 'over the Bridge' into deepest Bristol.
Initially, it was the Nicholas Wanderers 6 a-side with two teams - Ryan Farrell stepping into fill the 'A's goalkeeping crisis.
The 'B's (a mixture of both squads) were to have the excitement of a penalty shoot out in the group stage. But despite Nicky Jackson's winner, they were just edged out as a best third place qualifier.
The 'A's improved as they progressed, but some slack defending in the semi was to prove their undoing.
'A' team results:-
Group
L 0-1 Wellington Panthers
W 2-0 Longwell Green (Joyce J, Bould A)
D 0-0 Nicholas Wanderers
W 2-0 Croft Juniors (Lawson W, Jenkins R)
Quarter Final
W 1-0 Croft Juniors (Joyce J)
Semi Final
L 1-2 Cadbury Heath (Lawson W)
Then the week after it was onto real 'gashead' country in Kingswood for the Bristol Rovers Supporters JFC 5-aside.
The 'B's were again just thwarted from qualifying from the group phase - this time by one goal's difference.
For the 'A's, Dan Jones (from the 'B') took over the goalkeeping duties to join a minimalist squad.
By the semi, some of the boys were pretty tired. The one exception being Ryan Jenkins, who showed tremendous strength and stamina throughout; whilst Dan made a series of fine saves.
A sneaky Joyce J finish earned a draw, but Stapleton deserved to go through on penalties - and then went on to beat the home favourites to win the tournament.
Results:
Group
W 2-0 Bristol Central 'B' (Bould A x2)
W 1-0 Keynsham Town (Payne D)
W 2-1 Stapleton 'A' (Bould A, Payne D)
W 2-1 Henbury Colts (Bould A x2)

W 1-0 Bristol Central 'A' (Joyce J)
