Annual Reports
Under 14A
Manager: Dave MortimerAssistant: Roy Liddle
Last season's squad was supplemented by the addition of three new players, Jonathan Leahy, Declan Evans and David Moore.
The highlight of the season was an enthralling cup run that saw us reach the final losing 4-2 to a very good Llanishen Dons team. Along the way we secured our first ever wins against Pentwyn Dynamos (5-3) and Capitol Trucks(3-1). A tense 3-2 win in the semi final over Fairwater Colts saw us reach the final.
The league season started well with some good early wins that put us in the top four for the first half of the season. The boys suffered what might have been a set back for some teams just before Christmas when our goalkeeper and centre forward moved to pastures new. Fortunately the boys rallied round and immediately began their exciting cup run.
We finished what was a roller coaster but highly enjoyable season mid table.
My thanks to fellow coach Roy Liddle without whom the team would not function, the parents and to the whole squad for their skill, enthusiasm and continued support.
Declan Evans - Joined as a defender but bravely volunteered to play in goal half way through the season. He has developed into a fine keeper with great potential.
David Moore - A right sided player who can play at the back or in midfield. Has impressed with his dazzling runs. A great addition to the team who unfortunately broke his arm half way though the season.
Simon Hurley - Mid field/defence. Despite being a Liverpool fan he is an intelligent player who reads the game well. He has shown his versatility by playing in a number of positions to a high standard.
Owen Henderson - A tenacious pacy player who has grown in confidence this season. Can play at full back or as a tough tackling mid fielder. Even at this age he is better than his father.
Nigel Gumbleton - A strong powerful centre back equally good in the air as on the ground. Nigel has left bits of his body on most of the parks of Cardiff. The highlight of his season was his wonderful diving headed against the Dynamos.
Sean James - the best hair in the team and also one of the best left feet. Unlucky not to have scored one of the goals of the season when his 25 yard screamer against Ty Celyn came back off the bar.
Chris Cardinali - Player of the year last year, and unanimously chosen by the players as captain. Our defensive rock, Chris just gets better and better.
Nick Liddle - changes his hair colour more often than Beckham and strikes a dead ball like him as well. He has represented the FAW Academy and Cardiff Schools.
Kieran O'Brien - midfield. A wicked passer of the ball who can play in a variety of mid field roles. He has contributed a useful number of important goals.
Jonathan Leahy - Centre mid. A powerful play maker and ferocious tackler who loves to push forward to support the attack. The T - Rex of the team. An excellent first season.
Rhys Jones-Mathias - a deceptively quick centre midfield player with a powerful shot and an eye for goal. Got out of his sick bed to help us beat Grangetown.
Nyall Driscoll - midfield/striker. He has juggled his great success on the squash court with his football and we are always pleased when he is available to help us "squash" the opposition. A busy bee of a player who scored some important goals in our cup run.
Leigh Jenkins - midfield/striker. A quick thinking player with a good first touch and enormous enthusiasm. Always gives 100%.
Ross Branson - striker. A good dribbler who has scored some spectacular goals this season including a fantastic lob against the Dynamos in the cup.
Gareth Bevans - mid field/striker. An unselfish player with good ball control and vision. A good striker of the ball.
Ioan Mortimer - striker. His speed and skill have enabled him to score some spectacular goals and to finish as top goal scorer. He might have scored even more if he could tie his laces properly. Has represented the FAW Academy and Cardiff Schools.
Under 14B
Manager: Simon Hurford
The Panthers had a very enjoyable season and were victorious in more than half
of their games. The boys are committed to playing football in the right spirit
and are a tribute to this club. They managed a very creditable fourth position
in their division and were narrowly beaten semi-finalists at the Pentyrch Fives
Tournament, going out in a penalty shoot-out against the eventual champions.
With a squad that is growing rapidly in stature, next season promises to be even
better.
In our squad, we are fortunate to have the best goalkeeper in Cardiff at U14
level bar none in Mike McKenzie, who had another excellent all round season.
Mike showed what a talent he is playing both in goals and outfield. Mike also
represented the FAW Academy and Cardiff Schools again.
Our team has one of the strongest defences and one tall reason for that is the
colossus that is laid back Jonny Powell. He has been the ever-present pillar in
our defence performing consistently well. The team is rarely beaten when Jon is
playing, famous for his acrobatic high kicking and goals scored from the halfway
line.
Playing alongside Jon for much of the season was the solid rock that is William
Falleyn. The team needs a cool head at the back and Will was always there to
offer advice to his team mates. Will is a great passer of the ball.
Also playing a huge role in defence was the ever improving Daniel Price. Dan has
shown he can also step up to midfield, scoring goals and creating chances. Dan
works tirelessly for his team mates and is a pleasure to have in our team.
Every side team needs a utility player and we are no different. Cameron Squire
has shown he can play in most positions from goalkeeper to striker. Cameron is
renowned for hard man tackling and cool control in possession of the ball. Cam
is one of the few players that scores consistently with headers!
Midfielder turned defender, Josh Hurford has been a revelation at fullback late
in the season. Josh reads the game very well and is always there to sweep up any
mistakes. Josh has also played wide on the right and has shown he can beat
players and provide a telling pass.
Nile Bridgeman is into his second season but sadly has been dogged by injuries.
In the games he has been involved, he has frightened opposing teams with his
electrifying pace and evasive skills. Nile will always score goals for the team.
Stay away from skate boards this summer Nile!
Playing wide down the left is the ever improving Rhys Phillips who has scored
some of the most spectacular goals. Rhys offers real pace and width to our side
and there is no better sight than Rhys running at defenders with ball at his
feet.
Piers Kennedy has played with consistency and maturity in the heart of our
midfield. Piers has steadily improved as a midfield player and now offers a real
presence in the centre as well as goal poripential. His passing and deft touches
have catalysed many goals for his colleagues.
William Daly has played at several different positions this season to develop
his all round game. Will has excellent close ball control and a real attacking
predator's instinct in front of goal. Will is our 'fox-in-the-box'!
Tom Jones is another one of our emerging players. Tom has lead by example with
his solid tacking and timed interceptions. Tom has also played some killer
passes to set up team mates for goal scoring opportunities.
George Buckley has converted from striker to right side midfielder to improve
his overall game and fitness. George has responded well and is developing into
an excellent footballer. He still manages to pop up and score goals for the
team.
The ever improving and football mad Jac Humphreys has just completed his best
ever season for the Panthers. Striker turned centre midfielder, Jac has been
awesome this year and has dragged the team up to higher standard of play. His
marauding style through the centre of the pitch is terrific to watch and he is
never afraid to get stuck in to the opposition.
Cameron Nazimi was a new acquisition this season and has been an excellent
addition to the team. Cam has offered us an extra dimension on the right side
and will develop into a terrific footballer. Welcome Cam!
We were lucky enough to have a second good player join us this season in Peter
Williams. Peter is another one of our attacking wingers not afraid to take on
the opposition and get into advanced positions. Welcome Peter!
And finally, this coach is indebted to the contributions of his back room staff,
especially Sid Kennedy for the thankless task of refereeing home games, Arthur
Palfrey for his valuable coaching advice, Stuart Powell and Gary Williams for
stepping in when I have been away - plus all of the mums and dads who turned out
to help and cheer on the boys - MANY THANKS!

Lisvane Panthers 'A' :6 - Grangetown BC: 3
Venue: Sevenoaks Park
HT: 3-2
The U 14's got their league campaign off to a good start with a win against a solid Grangetown side. The first goal was claimed by Simon Hurley, finishing off a good team move with a thumping left foot strike.
Grangetown equalised and Nick Liddle restored the lead, with a great strike. Grangetown equalised again by cleverly lobbing the keeper John Melhuish, who had just pulled off an incredible save, using his height to stop the ball in the top corner of the goal.
Ioan Mortimer showed his class, blasting home a goal before half time. The game turned around with the score at 3-2.
Ioan matched his first goal by slotting home another to make the game 4-2. Ross Branson was brought down in the box and Dan Payne took his chance, scoring from the penalty spot.
Lisvane increased their lead, scoring their 6th goal and Grangetown scored late in the match to make the final result 6-3. A well deserved result for the Panthers.

Lisvane Panthers A :1 - Splott Albion: 3
Venue:
Pontcanna
HT: 1-0
Lisvane Panthers A gave away a 1-0 lead to lose this match 3-1.
The Panthers started well with a goal from Nick Liddle at the beginning of the first half. They held their lead well until half time. However, in the second half the boys allowed Splott back into the match. Splott hit back well with two early goals in the second half. The Panthers just didn't respond, and Splott added a third late on. It was a disappointing performance after they had started so well.

Lisvane Panthers 'A' :3 - Splott Albion: 2
Venue: Splott Park
HT: 3-0
This was a return match against Splott Albion, having gone down 3-1 only two days before. Neither side threatened in the first ten minutes, and it looked like it would be a tight game. However, an attempted clearance from new signing David from inside his own half, was fumbled by the Splott goalkeeper and found its way into the net. The boys looked revitalised, and Dan Payne added a second from the penalty spot. When Ross Branson added a third just before half time, the game looked over. However, Splott scored with a penalty, and then added a second. The last ten minutes was frantic, but Lisvane held on for an excellent win.

Lisvane Panthers 'A' : 2 - Pentyrch Rangers : 1
Venue: Pontcanna
HT: 0-0
The boys were finally back in action after a long break due to the weather, and were faced with a tricky tie at home against Pentyrch.
Lisvane started positively with some threatening attacks in the first 15 minutes, and Ross went closest to opening the scoring, forcing a fine save from the Pentyrch goalie. Pentyrch also had their fair share of chances and John pulled off some brilliant saves. However, at half time it was 0-0.
Straight after the break, Lisvane began strongly, and finally scored. It was an own goal by an unfortunate Pentyrch defender, who was under pressure from the hard working Ross Branson. About 10 minutes later, Nick Liddle scored one of the goals of the season with an unstoppable free kick. From then on Lisvane were forced to defend as Pentyrch had chance after chance. The boys defended superbly, and although Pentyrch did get a consolation goal, Lisvane held on to stay second in the league.

Lisvane Panthers 'A' : 1 - Fairwater Colts : 3
Venue: Pontcanna
HT: 1-0
The Panthers were looking for a third straight win with a match against the struggling Fairwater Colts. After eventually finding a pitch, and a delay due to missing nets, the game eventually started an hour later than planned.
Lisvane were on the back foot from the start, with Fairwater looking dangerous on the attack. They hit the post, and after 15 minutes, were awarded a dubious penalty. However, the penalty hit the post, and we were let off the hook. Although Lisvane were still second best, they looked stronger and scored through Ioan Mortimer with the aid of a deflection. At half time it was 1-0.
After the break, Fairwater equalised with a deflected goal which looped over John in goals. The Panthers then had many goal scoring opportunities, and Daniel Payne and Kieran O'Brien went close. With the game evenly matched, Fairwater scored again, this time with a header after a superb corner. The Colts then wrapped the game up in the final few minutes, with an own goal from John Melhuish after another great corner.
This was probably the worst performance of the season so far, but we are still second in the league, so the boys must not let their heads drop. The final score was 3-1 to Fairwater.

U14 Divisional Cup - Round 2
Lisvane Panthers 'A' : 5 - Pentwyn Dynamo : 3
Venue: Pontcanna
HT: 3-2
After a disappointing performance two weeks ago, we were looking to get back on track in the second round of the cup against Pentwyn. We were missing several key players, including John the goalkeeper, and we were extremely lucky to have a player like Declan, who agreed to go in goals.
The game started off finely balanced, with both sides passing the ball well. However, Pentwyn opened the scoring after 15 minutes. The boys didn't let their heads drop, and equalised with a superb run and finish from Ioan Mortimer. The game was still extremely tight when Pentwyn scored again through their dangerous striker. With half time approaching, Lisvane won a corner. The ball was headed away, but only as far as the outstanding Ioan, who hit a scorching volley reminiscent of Wayne Rooney's volley against Newcastle into the roof of the net. A minute later, we went ahead as Ioan completed a first half hat-trick. At half time it was 3-2.
After a superb first half, the Panthers fell asleep for the first five minutes of the second half, and allowed Pentwyn to equalise. This seemed to wake the boys up, and they again looked dangerous on the attack. A long ball was played forward after an hour of play, which the Pentwyn 'keeper misjudged. It was then left to Ross to finish, and he did in style with an audacious lob. We were in the lead, and deservedly so. Soon after, Lisvane added a fifth, with yet another goal from Ioan Mortimer, who was giving one of the best individual performances of the season. With 10 minutes to go, Pentwyn threw everything at the Panthers' defence, who did fantastically well to keep the score at 5-3. The Panthers still looked dangerous on the counter attack, and could have added a sixth late on. However, Lisvane held on for a brilliant win, knocking out one of the favourites for the cup.
This was probably the best performance of the season. A big well done to every single one of the boys who played, especially Declan, who was outstanding in goal. The final score was 5-3.

Lisvane Panthers 'A' : 2 - AFC Whitchurch YC : 4
Venue: Pontcanna
HT: 1-3
The Panthers were looking to carry on where they left off last week, but this time against top of the table Whitchurch. Lisvane were down to a squad of 11 players, and we need to thank Nigel and once again Declan, who each played a half in goals.
The boys began where they left off last Saturday, battling for every ball and being strong in the tackle. However, Whitchurch took the lead after 20 minutes after some good chances down the other end. Straight from the following kick off, Whitchurch made it two in a minute following a defensive mix up. The boys didn't stop pushing forward though, and pulled a goal back through Rhys Jones Mathias, who finished neatly from 12 yards. Five minutes before half time, Whitchurch's dangerous striker Dennis smashed home a superb effort from 25 yards. At half time, the score was 3-1, but it was once again an excellent first half performance from Lisvane.
In the second half Declan was injured so replaced Nigel in goals. The boys started the second half still battling for every ball, and never giving up. However, Whitchurch scored a fourth after 15 minutes of the second half. Both sides continued to create chances, with Ioan shaving the post after a mazy run. With 10 minutes to go, Rhys had a superb run down the left hand side and whipped in a cross. The ball eluded everybody except for Kieran O'Brien, who shot into the top corner with a great finish. Lisvane looked for a third in the dying moments, but it wasn't to be.
The Panthers battled superbly for the whole 80 minutes, but in the end were outclassed by a stronger Whitchurch side. The game ended in a 4-2 win for Whitchurch.

Lisvane Panthers 'A' : 0 - Capitol Truck Colts : 1
Venue: Trelai Park
HT: 0-0
After a long break for Christmas, the boys were back in action against Capitol Trucks, who are just behind us in the league. We didn't manage to find a goalkeeper over the Christmas period, so yet again Nigel and Declan shared the goalkeeping duties.
The first ten minutes belonged to Lisvane, who started strongly with some good work down both flanks, especially from Nick Liddle, who was making his first appearance since November. As the first half unfolded, Lisvane continued to attack well. However, Capitol Trucks also had their fair share of chances, catching Lisvane on the break on numerous occasions. Although their were many goalscoring opportunities, the score at half time was 0-0.
The second half began in the same manner as the first half ended, with both sides attacking well. However, Ioan was being marshalled well up front, so clear cut chances were limited. With 20 minutes left, Ioan spotted the 'keeper off his line, and his superb chip was excellently saved.
The game looked as if it would end in a draw after Nigel pulled off two unbelievable saves. However, from the resulting corner, a powerful header was directed goalwards, and founds its way into the corner of the net. Capitol Trucks held on for a narrow win, although a draw would have been a fair result. It was an encouraging performance from the boys, who can hopefully beat the Trucks next week, and progress in the cup.

U14 Divisional Cup - Round 3
Lisvane Panthers 'A' : 3 - Capitol Truck Colts : 1
Venue: Trelai Park
HT: 1-1
After losing to Capitol Trucks last week, Lisvane were hoping to win, this time in the cup. Yet again Nigel and Declan had a half each in goals.
The game began with Lisvane bossing the midfield, and creating chances. After 10 minutes, a long, high ball from John was latched onto by Ioan, who rolled the ball past the 'keeper to make the score 1-0. The Colts began to create chances of their own, and five minutes before half time, Capitol Trucks equalised with a well worked move and finish. At half time, the score was 1-1, and both sides had everything to play for.
In the second half, Lisvane started well, and within five minutes had taken the lead. Dave whipped the ball into the box, and Ioan volleyed the ball over the 'keeper for a brilliant second goal. The game began to get extremely tense, with the Panthers afraid to give away their lead, and Capitol Trucks throwing everything forward. However, Lisvane still managed to create chances, with Nyall and Ross going very close.
The game looked as if it would never end, but in the dying moments, Ioan broke down the right, and crossed perfectly. Nyall made no mistake, and put the game out of the Colts' reach. The final score was 3-1, and if Lisvane can play like this again, they could go on and win the cup.

Lisvane Panthers 'A' : 4 - Ty Celyn : 2
Venue: Pontcanna
HT: 1-1
Lisvane were hoping to continue their good form today with a win against Ty Celyn. Nigel again went in goals, this time for the whole game because Declan was ill.
The game began, and it was evident that this was going to be one of the most physical games of the season, with tackles flying in everywhere. Chances were even, with Ioan going close on a number of occasions. However, the Ty Celyn goalkeeper pulled off a number of good saves. The game looked as if it would stay at 0-0 until Lisvane won a penalty when Ioan was held back by a defender. Nick took the penalty, but unfortunately the ball hit the post. This seemed to give Ty Celyn more confidence going forward, and they took the lead just before half time. However, Lisvane equalised with a cool finish from Ioan. The score at half time was 1-1.
In the second half, Lisvane looked stronger in midfield, and when Leigh Jenkins was brought on, he brought new energy into the side. It was Leigh who contributed to the second goal, forcing the goalkeeper into an error, and Ross headed in from close range. The game swung Lisvane's way, and they scored a third, with a well placed low free kick from the outstanding Ioan. With 15 minutes to go, the Panthers added a fourth, when a great pass from Simon Hurley was turned in by Ioan, who completed a hat trick. The Panthers fell asleep after the goal, and allowed Ty Celyn a goal and a way back into the match. However, the Panthers never looked like losing and held on for a second consecutive win.

Lisvane Panthers 'A' : 0 - Pentyrch Rangers : 4
Venue: Parc Y Dwrlyn
HT: 0-2
Today was a new game and new kit for the Panthers, which was so orange you needed sunglasses to look at it. Lisvane were hoping for a win over Pentyrch, whom we had beaten earlier in the season.
The first ten minutes were pretty even, with Rhys battling hard up front. However, it was Pentyrch who had more of the chances, catching the Panthers on the break on numerous occasions. Lisvane just couldn't seem to get a goal scoring opportunity, and ten minutes before half time Pentyrch took the lead with a low drive from long range. A few minutes later, Lisvane were caught asleep at the back, and Pentyrch scored a second goal to make the score 2-0 at half time.
In the second half, Lisvane brought on Nick and top scorer Ioan to strengthen the attack. However, with Lisvane pushing forward and looking for a way back into the match, Pentyrch scored a third completely against the run of play. As the second half carried on, Lisvane just couldn't seem to break down the solid Rangers defence, and late on Pentyrch added a fourth. The final score was 4-0.
Although all the boys worked hard throughout the game, it wasn't one of the better performances of the season. Well done to Pentyrch, who played and defended superbly. The boys will be hoping to bounce back from this defeat to beat Grangetown next Saturday.

Lisvane Panthers 'A' : 2 - Llanishen Dons : 4
Venue: Pontcanna
HT: 2-2
Lisvane were looking for a win today against one of their nearest rivals, Llanishen Dons. A win for the Dons would take them ahead of Lisvane.
Lisvane looked dangerous in the first ten minutes, and took the lead after a great run and composed finish from Ioan. Ioan added a second five minutes later, and it looked as if Lisvane would dominate for the full 80 minutes. However, Llanishen found a way back into the match and pulled back a goal with half an hour gone. Llanishen then scored the equaliser with a magnificent free kick. At half time the score was 2-2, with everything to play for.
In the second half, Llanishen looked very strong, and took the lead only a few minutes after the restart. Lisvane just couldn't get back into the match, and the Dons began to close out the game well. The Panthers became frustrated, and Llanishen added a fourth late on.
After a promising first twenty minutes, Lisvane just couldn't get a stranglehold on the game. The final score was 4-2 to Llanishen.

Lisvane Panthers 'A' : 6 - Fairwater Colts : 6
Venue: Trelai Park
HT: 0-4
After a disappointing result last week, Lisvane were hoping to beat Fairwater for the first time in junior football. The Panthers started the game with only a twelve man squad.
The match started terribly for the boys, as they conceded a goal directly from a corner with barely a minute gone. Fairwater looked on top throughout the early stages, and added a second with ten minutes played. Fairwater could have added two more in the next five minutes if it wasn't for some superb defending from Chris and some great saves from Declan. Lisvane weren't offering much in attack, and the only goal scoring opportunity in the first half for the Panthers came after a good run and cross from Kieran was cleared off the line. With twenty minutes played Fairwater scored a third, and it looked as if the game was over. It seemed that way when the Colts added yet another goal before half time. The score at the break was 4-0.
After an appalling first half, Lisvane looked a changed side. With only a minute gone, Ioan ran down the right and side and squared the ball for Kieran who finished extremely well. After Ioan had a shot cleared off the line, he scored a great goal, and Lisvane were back in the match. The boys started to show a lot of skill, with Ioan going past four players and nearly scoring at one stage. It was a Cruyff turn and pass from Kieran which fed Sean down the right hand side. He passed to Ross who's cross found John, and John finished incredibly well for his first goal for the club. After all the hard work the Panthers put in to get back into the match, they conceded a fifth goal when Fairwater caught them on the break. But it wasn't over yet. Lisvane created chance after chance, and after a superb pass from substitute Gareth, Ioan scored his second. With seven minutes to play, Lisvane launched yet another attack on the Fairwater goal, and scored an equaliser through Ioan to complete an amazing comeback. Ioan had completed yet another hat-trick. With 5 minutes to go, Lisvane amazingly took the lead when Ioan rounded the 'keeper and finished sublimely. With Fairwater looking for an equaliser, Lisvane had to defend well, and they did until then final minute when a Fairwater striker forced a great save from Declan, and another Colts player pounced on the rebound to score.
It was a sensational second half performance from Lisvane who produced a marvellous comeback. It was a exhilarating game to play in, and every single player who was there deserves credit for the performance. The final score was 6-6.

Lisvane Panthers 'A' : 6 - Heol Hir : 1
Venue: Pontcanna
HT: 2-1
Today Lisvane had just 12 players in their squad, but that was more than Heol Hir who only had 10! However, the game went ahead as planned with Heol Hir agreeing to play with 10 men.
The game started evenly, with both sides having a fair amount of possession. After a quarter of an hour, Lisvane made the breakthrough with a great goal from Ioan. However, the Panthers failed to capitalise on this lead, and Heol Hir equalised with a good team move. Following the equaliser, the game was getting more physical, and both teams were looking for the next goal. It was Lisvane who got it, when Ioan scored his second of the game. At half time it was 2-1 to Lisvane.
As soon as the second half began, it was clear that Lisvane would dominate. They quickly grabbed a third through John Leahy after a lovely flowing move. It was John who scored his second and Lisvane's fourth 5 minutes later with a superb volley from a corner which was palmed by the goalkeeper into the roof of the net. With 15 minutes to go, Lisvane made sure of the win when Nyall finished with composure from six yards. With a few minutes left, John scored his first hat-trick for the club to wrap up a comfortable win for Lisvane. The final score was 6-1.

U14 Division Cup - Semi Final
Lisvane Panthers 'A' : 3 - Fairwater Colts : 2
Venue: Trelai Park
HT: 1-1
Today was the most important day of the season for Lisvane as it was the semi final of the cup, their second semi final in three years of 11 a side football. Their opponents were Fairwater, who knocked Lisvane out last time they reached this stage.
Lisvane started strongly, creating chances from the off. After only a few minutes, Ioan was put through on goal, and made no mistake, putting the Panthers 1-0 up with a superb finish. The Panthers continued to threaten the Fairwater defence, and almost scored a second when Ross was denied by a great save from the Colts' keeper. Despite all the Lisvane pressure and possession, Fairwater found a way back into he match when they were awarded a dubious penalty. The penalty was slotted home, and at half time the score was 1-1, with the Panthers confident of getting another goal.
